The grand finale

The kid chose Lakshmana* to be the one to sleep last night, symbolising the end of the festival season.

The golu will be dismantled today.

Who knows what next year holds for us.  The little dolls would have to wait in their boxes until this time next year to find out.

*Unintended but fitting.  The poor guy stood guard without food or sleep for 14 long years during vanavaas.  It’s only fair that he sleeps on the day his brother won the demon king. (For the uninitiated, this is a myth from the epic Ramayan – Rama and Sita were banished from the kingdom for 14 years and Rama’s brother, Lakshmana spent the 14 years standing guard over his brother and sister-in-law.)

PS:  That tattered book you see on the floor is my first music note book. It is 38 years old. It has everything from sarali varisai to ada thala varnam, hand written by my first music teacher,  Sri Vaidyanathan, may his soul rest in peace.  It has been placed on the alter every Saraswathi puja day for the past 38 years.
